Spaced Out has been engaged by the City of South Perth and the Connect South Design Team to activate Mends Street by engaging with the local community, developing a placemaking strategy, building community support and implementing activation initiatives. Our team is also providing valuable activation advice in regard to the Connect South Concept Design.
The placemaking strategy outlines the results of our creative engagement process with an emphasis on providing practical advice for the community and council to work in partnership and build the vibrancy, community and economic development of Mends Street.
Current initiatives being undertaken include a weekly farmers market, open air cinema nights, activation ideas forum with ECU students and regular meetings with business traders. In terms of capacity building, we are working to establish a town team called the ‘South Perth Activation Network’, which will guide placemaking and activation in the future responding to local community desires. In the short period since commencing the project, a majority of businesses have already expressed improved direct and/or indirect financial improvements.
Finally, a branding project is also being established to make the wider public aware Mends Street is open for business and the area is being rejuvenated with fresh local ideas and community support.
